The first thing worth noting when discussing who should complete a fire risk assessment are employees with specialties like building engineering or industrial hygiene.

All big business’s have people with these specialties on staff, but they’re not the ones who do fire risk assessments. The responsibility of completing an assessment usually falls to facilities managers or directors.

It’s their job to take care of everything from construction and maintenance for your buildings to safety measures like sprinkler systems, so it makes sense that this is one thing they should be responsible for as well!

However, regardless of whether it’s a director in charge or someone else at the company who does them regularly, all investigations have some common steps:

-A walkthrough where you’ll inspect any building features that could cause fires (for example anything flammable)or impede evacuation. You’ll also survey any exit routes and make sure there are no imped.

 

Any of these could be responsible for doing the risk assesments

  • an employer
  • the owner
  • the landlord
  • an occupier
  • anyone else with control of the premises, for example a facilities manager, building manager, managing agent or risk assessor

 

 

The responsibility for fire risk assessment can be shared between many parties. For example, landlords are responsible to get a fire risk assessment done when they rent out property; but employers also have an obligation to provide their employees with safe work environments and should potentially take on the cost of getting one carried out if necessary. Ultimately, it’s up to whoever has control over premises where there is potential for serious injury or death that could occur through fires – such as an employer in this case!

 

-A walkthrough where you’ll inspect any building features that could cause fires (for example anything flammable)or impede evacuation. You’ll also survey any exit routes and make sure there are no impediments like lockers, furniture etcetera.

 

 

-A detailed inspection to assess the building’s fire alarms and sprinkler systems. This is generally only required for large buildings designated as “high risk”.

 

-An explanation of how you’ll maintain a safe environment in your building, such as regular checks for any potential hazards or obstacles.
